When I got into photography a few years ago it was not uncommon that I would spend and entire day driving hundreds of miles just to see what I could find. I decided to have another of those drives this weekend and set out around 1pm, giving myself 4 hours to drive till the sun set.
After driving through Hennepin, Wright, Meeker and McCloud counties without finding anything particularly interesting, I entered Sibley County and decided to check my GPS for saved locations. The nearest destination was “Abandoned Barn”, 7.2 miles southeast, while “Minnesota Farm Scene” was about 15 miles away. Having driven hundreds of miles on farm roads over the past 4 years, I have quite a few locations that I’ve saved for days with better light, but I couldn’t recall which barn this may be.
I turned off the highway and knew I was near Winthrop when I saw the steam from the ethanol refinery in the distance. After a few more miles, I was there. Though the barn itself was not very inspiring, the light was just about perfect for all of the tones.
I’m now shooting with a Pentax K-5 IIs instead of slide film. For these images, I used a Pentax 70mm f/2.4 Limited lens, and 2-Stop Lee GND and 5800 Kelvin white balance.
